Beaver and Cub Paper Machè Models

We will be completing them next week as they are lying on my kitchen floor wet. We are trying to make them at bit more substantial as they were a bit thin. We will probably get poster paint over us so wear scruff clothes next week and not your school uniforms.

There are some pictures on our website for you to look at under the Beaver Gallery.

Scout and Explorer Night Hike

Well done to the 9 of you that walked the route. It was perfect weather for once. And you never got lost!

Pictures on the website under Scout Gallery. Enjoy

Scout Outdoor Challenge

Scouts if you want to do part of your Outdoor Challenge (for some it will finish off their Award), the Warden at Carwynnen Campsite, Troon and I have arranged a day helping at the site next SUNDAY, 21st MAY. You will be tidying up the site, plus going into the woods next door to cut down Sycamore trees to start making a special gate and fence for the chapel that is on site. Once cut down the trees will need to be trimmed by axe and carried to the campsite.

We will be at the site from 10am to 5pm. You will need to bring drinks, snacks and a packed lunch. Can you bring a £1 (donation towards cost of your tea) as we are going to cook sausages and baked potatoes on a campfire using tin foil.

You will need to fill in the One Day Activity Form and bring it with you.

Film Making

Hopefully during the next couple of Fridays we will be trying to have a go at film making. If anyone wants to bring in a video camera please do as we can take shots from different angles. Anything we make we want to try and show at our A.G.M. on 23rd June.

Group A.G.M.

We haven’t had an AGM in our Group for several years but Scout HQ says we have to hold one so we are going to hold ours on 23rd June at the hall from 7pm. We will talk about what we have done, what we will be doing during the next 12 months, etc. We will also show the films we are going to try and make over the next weeks.

We are also going to give out any Badges and Awards the members have earned up to the AGM.

It would be nice if we could Invest any youngsters who need to be Invested.

Afterwards we want to have an informal get together and chat so we will be sending a note out soon asking if each person can bring a plate of something such as sandwiches, sausage rolls, etc.

More news soon or look at our website:

The Story of the Three Tramps

Three tramps met one day and decided to put their food together to make an extra special stew. Each put his contribution into the pot, and they sat around the fire and looked forward to a splendid dinner.

After a while two of the tramps went off to find some more wood. While they were gone the other tramp thought to himself “If I take my piece of meat out of the pot, I’ll still have a jolly fine dinner and still have my piece of meat to myself”. So he took his share of the meat from the pot and waited for the others to return.

After a while another of the tramps was left alone while the others went off in search of wood and he had the same idea as the first tramp. So he took his piece of meat out of the pot as well.

Finally the third tramp was left alone and he came up with the same idea and he too took his piece of meat out of the pot.

They sat around the fire waiting for their dinner and can you imagine their surprise when they dished it out all they got was a bowl of hot water each.

The moral of this story is you only get out of Scouting what you put in. The more you join in the more you will learn and enjoy it.

The Story of a Good Turn

This story is true and goes back to the beginnings of Scouting.

In the year 1909, a couple of years after Scouting was founded a chap called William D Boyce, a publisher from Chicago, America was in London on a business trip.

Imagine London then with all the coal fire burning, the narrow streets and factories belching out smoke. It was really smoggy and he got totally lost trying to find his way to a meeting. He was really worried as well because in the fog people used to rob others and no-one could see who had done it. The back streets of London were not a nice place to be especially if you were an outsider.

Mr Boyce was walking down this street when he was approached by a teenage boy who saluted and asked him what he was doing and did he want any help. He told the boy he had a meeting at a publishers and the boy said he would take him there. True to his word the boy got him to his meeting. As he went in he tried to give the boy some money but the lad refused and said he was a Scout and they did not take money for helping others as it was part of his Duty to help others and to do Good Turns. Boyce was amazed as in those days no-one did anything for nothing. He asked the boy to wait for him until his meeting was over.

After his meeting he asked the boy all about Scouting and the boy took him to meet Robert Baden-Powell who had just set up some offices in London. BP told him all about Scouting and Boyce went back to the USA with books and information. Boyce started the Boy Scouts of America.

A Little while later the BSA tried to find the Unknown Scout who did the Good Turn but they couldn’t so they held a collection for him in the USA and with the money the raised they put up a statue in Gilwell Park (the home of Scouting) of a Bronze Buffalo, and dedicated it to “The Unknown Scout”.

Anyone can go to Gilwell and see the statue and American Scouts have told the story of the London Scout and his Good Turn to every boy or girl who has joined their movement just like we talk how Mowgli joined the Wolf Pack and became a Cub.
