STOP PRESS 27th June

Our Group meeting on 23rd June was well attended with almost every member there. We thank our parents who came and brought plates of food for our buffet.

We invested 2 Beavers, 5 Cubs and 2 Scouts. We now have 11 invested members in the Group. Not bad since the end of January. We need to double our numbers by Christmas.

Everyone received any badges they have earned since January. We handed out over 100 badges plus certificates.

Our ideal numbers being 12 Beavers, 12 Cubs, 8 Scouts and 4 Explorers, pus Leaders for each Section. We will try and increase numbers by word of mouth, talks, newsletters and leaflet drops within the village and local schools.

We had a chat about activities and fund raising and Skip tried to twist a few arms to try and get a couple of parents to take on the roll of fund raising.

Subs will stay the same at £2 per week, but everyone has agreed to fund raise. Subs to be paid weekly not each school term.

We are now taking part in the Gift Aid Scheme and now have a registration number. Skip needs help to sort out how to do it. Everyone who is working please fill in a Gift Aid Declaration Form.

We agreed that all money fund raised would be used for activities and equipment.

We agreed that we are all taking part in Challenge 350 on the Sunday and we would apply to the bit closest to us.

We have agreed to hold a Group Weekend Camp where our members teach their parents/guardians scouting skills such as fire lighting, open fire cooking and tent pitching.

We are also going to investigate going on a barge trip next year, go over to the Scilly Isles for a day, maybe go on the ferry to Spain and back for the day.

We also agreed to pay for Leader training and Leader uniform tops.

Skip asked if any Parents have a skill that could be used to help the youngsters but no-one put their hand up. He will keep trying.

Group will pay for member's 2007 scarves and badges out of fund raising but parents must pay for their own.

Skip asked if anyone fancied being the Group's Chairman, or Treasure, Committee Member, Fund Raiser or Quartermaster but there were no takers unfortunately.

14th May

Last night at the District AGM our Scouts were awarded the Trophy for the best Scout Troop in the District. The citation read:

The trophy is being awarded to the 2nd Hayle Scout Troop for taking part in as many District and County Events as they could. For taking part in their 6th International camp in 8 years and for showing true Scouting Spirit during the last year, even when they were closed for 5 months.

6th May

8 Members of our Group took part in the District Scout Night Hike. They joined Scouts from 3 other Groups, 1st Lanner, 1st Camborne and 2nd Redruth. They hiked from Godrevy to 1st Lanner's HQ in perfect conditions. After having a short kip they sat down to a cooked breakfast. All went home tired but happy. Have a look at the Scout photo gallery

May 1st 2006

We have had a word with the owner of the Poldark Mine about some of us from our Group, plus some from 2nd Redruth, spending the night down the mine on a sponsored sleepover. He said we could, so we are going back in September after the season to talk to him. The chap is a ex-scout who used to be in 2nd Redruth. Hopefully we could get the closest Friday night to the longest day of the year. Skip could read some of his ghost stories to everyone. We could call it "The Night of 1000 Tales"!

Skip says -"You would come out shivering wrecks the next morning. My tales are too scary for you lot."

Next year we are thinking of going on a narrowboat trip on the canals around Warwickshire instead of camping. We have some brochures and will discuss it with our Cubs, Scouts and Explorers. We can get 12 berth single bunk boats for roughly £720 each per week during August or roughly £60 per person. We have looked at the price of the Jamborees for next year and they want £140-160 each just to camp. Time we add in food, transport, etc we are looking at £260 each.

We aim to fundraise the boat money by sponsored walks (Challenge 350), sleepovers (see above), and doing car boot sales. Everyone going will have to muck in. Rough cost is £60  plus food and transport will be £150. Add on £50 per person for activities such as Cadbury World, Drayton Manor, etc.  Watch this space. We might go for 2 weeks if we can afford it.

Perhaps we could have one boat for Scouts and Explorers, and one for Cubs. There will be 2 adults per boat so we are looking for 20 youngsters to come with us.

During it's first 26 days our website had  223 visits from 88 unique sites. During the 223 visits you opened 2579 pages of info.

We will hand out any badges gained at our Group Meeting so everyone can see what each youngster has earned.

We are trying to set up a day with the Warden at Carwynnen Campsite for our Scouts so they can help on the site and so finish their Outdoor Challenge Award.

There is a shop in Redruth that sells uniforms for all Sections (save going to Truro). Up the main street to the town clock. Turn left and it is one of those in that small street. We will find out which one and put the name on this site.

We are still looking for a small piece of open ground so we can do fire lighting, play games practise camping, etc. Anyone know of anything?
