Useful Information and F.A.Q's
Meeting Times
We try to start our meetings on time each week so please can you be on time as well. We ask Scouts and Explorers not to arrive at the HQ until the Cubs and Beavers have finished. Once a meeting is over no member is allowed to leave unless they are being picked up by a Parent or other adult (that we know about) unless we are told in advance.
What are meetings?
Most indoor meetings will usually consist of a couple of games, some badge work and free time. We have a large selection of games that we choose from so these are different every week. The badgework that you will be doing will be based on the badges available to your Section. The badge work you will doing will be posted on our web pages. Just click on the link under your Section marked Group/weekly activities. A rough guide of these weekly activities will also be on the calendar on our Home page. Your Section page will hopefully have a link on most of the activities so you will see which badge you are working towards and what you have to do to earn it.
What Badges can I earn
There different types of badges to earn. Some are for each Section, some can be earned as a Group and some are staged badges that can be earned over the time you are a member. Each Section has Activity Badges, Challenge Awards and Chief Scout Awards. The Chief Scout's Awards are the top Awards that you can earn in the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Explorers can also earn or work towards the Queen's Scout Award. Our site has the requirements for each Badge and Award for each Section.
What Uniform do I need
All members in Scouting wear uniforms. We do not ask you to buy a uniform before you join our Group. We recommend you come to roughly 4 meetings then buy your uniform. Each Section has a different uniform. We ask you to buy a uniform top so we can invest you. You will be given a Group neckerchief when you are invested. You can buy uniform trousers if you want. If you do not buy the trousers we ask that for the twice a year that we parade (St George's Day and Remembrance Day), you wear formal school trousers and black shoes. For normal meetings you wear your uniform top, necker, and trousers such as jeans plus wear trainers. For some outdoor activities you are asked to wear your uniform and necker and for others just your necker.
How much does it cost to join
There is no fee to join any Scout Group. Each Group is self funding and raises money by fundraising, sponsorship or by charging a subscription (subs). Our Group does fundraising and charges a weekly subs which are collected at the beginning of each meeting. Subs pay for the cost to hire our HQ, weekly activity costs, badges and Capitation to Scout HQ. Capitation covers HQ costs to run the Scout Association and to insure all our members. At present our subs are £2 per week. If anyone misses a week we ask if they can pay for the week they miss unless they tell us in advance. If someone doesn't turn up we still have to pay for our HQ but worst of all we waste money buying stuff for activities but don't use them because people aren't there.
What other costs are there
Most outdoor activities have an extra cost such as camps, sleepovers, hikes, days out, etc. We inform you well in advance of the costs involved in any particular activity. These activities are not compulsory but do complement our weekly activities so we recommend you take part in as many as you can. If we teach you how to camp we are sure you want to put what you learn into practise.
If you have any more questions please post them on our forum and we will attempt to answer them. If we feel that others will benefit from hearing our reply we will add them to this page.
